Farmer to Farmer Short-term International Volunteer Opportunities

Land O’Lakes International Development Division is currently looking for volunteers for the USAID Farmer to Farmer Program (F2F) in the Middle East and North Africa. The Farmer to Farmer program relies on the expertise of U.S. citizens and green card holders to respond to agriculture and agribusiness needs in the developing world. Volunteers donate their time and Land O’Lakes takes care of all of the volunteer’s travel arrangements and expenses relating to the assignment.

Farmer to Farmer assignments are a great way to gain international work experience, offer expertise to those in need and get a chance to see a new part of the world. Most Farmer to Farmer volunteers return to report great personal satisfaction from the experience.

Assignment Title: New Product Development: Shredded Pizza Topping Cheese  Location:  Lebanon
Assignment Objective:

A host organization in Lebanon that deals with production and distribution of dairy products, is looking for a volunteer to help develop a new line of shredded cheese for pizza toppings. The host currently produces several types mainly into three broad categories: white cheeses, processed cheese and natural cheeses.  The host is looking to expand their business by producing shredded cheese pizza toppings which would have very high marketability.  The host currently lacks the knowhow and would like someone to help train them on production techniques, make recommendations for the type of equipment needed and the best hygienic practices to produce a high-quality product.

The required qualifications for the assignment are: degree in food science/technology or equivalent experience in dairy sector, at least five years experience in cheese processing.

Assignment Title:   Goat Cheese Production Location:  Lebanon
Assignment Objective:

A medium size dairy facility in Lebanon is looking for a volunteer expert to help with the production of goat cheese and fresh Crottin.  The host has faced challenges producing goat cheese that meets the level of taste and quality as imported goat cheeses. If good quality goat cheese can be produced it will have a big impact locally in terms of using local farmer’s goat milk for a product that is typically imported. The host would like a volunteer to help the production procedures, taste, quality control, shelf life, selection of tools needed for production and checking quality, and advice on packaging if possible.

The required qualifications for the assignment are: degree in food science/technology or equivalent experience in dairy sector, at least five years experience implementing production procedures and quality assurance of fresh goat cheese and crottin.

Assignment Title:   Producing High Quality Soft Cheese Location:  Egypt
Assignment Objective:

An organization in Egypt is looking for a volunteer expert to help with capacity building of the local dairy processors in 5 different regions in Egypt. The host is looking for a volunteer expert to visit cheese processing units and identify the main problems facing the production process and to introduce advice on overcoming processing problems encountered during the production of traditional raw milk soft cheese. Additionally, the volunteer will be asked to make recommendations that fit the production level I each processing unit and present a seminar for food technology researchers on the findings.

The required qualifications for the assignment are: degree in food science/dairy processing, at least five years of experience in producing soft cheese from raw milk.

Assignment Title:   New Cheese Production Location:  Lebanon
Assignment Objective:

A dairy processing facility in Lebanon is looking for an expert to help them assess their facilities’ capabilities, check their current production and train their workers on the production of new types of cheeses. The facility is mainly interested in producing ricotta, fresh mozzarella, and spreadable cheese.  This host would like to improve the quality of their products and extend the shelf life of their cheeses so that they have high marketability in the Lebanese market to help with the demand to produce these cheeses locally.

The required qualifications for the assignment are: degree in food science, at least five years of experience producing one or more of the cheeses mentioned above…

Assignment Title:   Microbiology Testing among Lactic Acid Bacteria and Bacillus Cereus Location:  Lebanon
Assignment Objective:

A well-established food testing laboratory in Lebanon is looking to add new testing services to their laboratory.  The host would like to find a volunteer expert to help provide adequate training to the team regarding the right microbiological testing methods for lactic acid bacteria and Bacillus Cereus. The volunteer needs to be able to provide both theoretical and practical training concerning the two parameters. The required qualifications for the assignment are: degree in microbiology, and at least 5 years of experience in practical knowledge and experience in microbiology testing and uncertainty calculation.

Assignment Title:   Dairy Cattle Foot Health and Hoof Trimming Location:  Egypt
Assignment Objective:

A host organization in Egypt is looking for a volunteer expert to help conduct field visits and provide training on proper dairy cattle foot health care management.  The host would like to help farmers minimize the tremendous economic losses associated with improper hoof care. The volunteer will help provide on-site technical training to the host organization’s technical team on proper hoof care techniques and preventative management including feed management and stall comfort. Some common hoof problems include but are not limited to; foot rot, heel erosion, Laminitis, sole ulcers, and digital dermatitis.

 

The required qualifications for the assignment are: degree in Veterinary Medicine with a focus on hoof care management and at least five years of practical knowledge and experience in hoof trimming and foot care.

Assignment Title:   Green Beans Farming Practices in Greenhouses Location:  Egypt
Assignment Objective:

A host organization in Egypt is looking for a volunteer expert to help provide technical assistance to green been growers in establishing efficient production systems under greenhouses.  The host would like to help farmers enhance the capacity of green been growers to achieve higher incomes and profitability by efficiently producing high quality green beans. The volunteer will meet with vegetable growers, extension agents and specialist to identify the major problems.  Based on the visits the volunteer will help make recommendations to the green bean growers on the best farming practices including production of healthy seeds, land preparation, watering, soil fertility management, plant protection and postharvest handling.

 

The required qualifications for the assignment are: degree in Horticulture or a related science, at least five years of experience and practical knowledge in the production of green beans under greenhouses.

Assignment Title:   Package Bee Production, Queen Rearing and Breeding Location:  Lebanon
Assignment Objective:

A privately-owned, medium-scale business in Lebanon is looking for a volunteer expert to train the beekeeper and his assistant on creating a systematic method of package bee production starting from queen rearing, mating nucs formation and package bee preparation and maintenance. Upon completion of the training workshop, the beekeeper will be able to produce large and systemativ methods of bee packages with young and self-sustained queens.

The required qualifications for the assignment are: degree in apiculture or a related degree and at least five years of practical knowledge and experience in queen rearing and bee breeding.

Assignment Title:   Organic Cookie Production Location:  Lebanon
Assignment Objective:

A family-owned company is looking for a volunteer expert to help start a new product line of locally produced cookies and granola bars. The volunteer will help create new recipes and determine healthy and organic ingredients and train and educate the host’s team on the proper process needed to produce high quality healthy organic cookies and granola bars, at an affordable price.

The required qualifications for the assignment are: degree in food science or food processing and at least three years experience in the production of baking organic cookies and snacks.

Assignment Title:   Waxes and Sterol Testing by Graph Chromatography in oils and fats Location:  Lebanon
Assignment Objective:

A well-established laboratory in Lebanon is looking for a volunteer expert to guide the technical team step-by-step from sample preparation on available Thermo GC through graph interpretation and the common problems they could face later.  The training will help to add those two parameters to the scope of ISO 17025 accreditation of the host lab that has been earned by ANAB, an accreditation body located in the US.

 

The required qualifications for the assignment are: university degree and proven experience in chemical analysis and related issues and at least five years experience the chromatography technique.

Assignment Title:   Good Agricultural Practices for Apple Orchards Location:  Lebanon
Assignment Objective:

The host organization, an agricultural training center, which offers extension services, is looking for a volunteer expert to train apple growers on good agricultural practices, pruning and new improved varieties of apples. The host organization works mainly with growers in the Mount Lebanon region. Most of these groups of farmers have no academic agricultural background, although they developed some practical experience through working in their lands. As such, they are requesting a volunteer expert to increase their knowhow and learn new techniques to assist them in producing higher quality apples that will increase their marketability.

The required qualifications for the assignment are: degree in horticulture or related field and at least five years practical experience in fruit tree production – especially apples, with a focus on pruning and good agricultural practices.

Assignment Title:   Sweet Potato Processing Location:  Egypt
Assignment Objective:

A company that produces and processes sweet potatoes in Egypt is looking for a volunteer expert to enhance the host organization’s practical skills in sweet potato processing and develop new products from sweet potatoes including fries, puree and other chips. The volunteer will assess the needs of the trainees and tailor a four-day training on sweet potato processing, potential products, required machinery production lines and quality requirements.

The required qualifications for the assignment are: university degree in food science or technology and at least five years of experience in sweet potato processing.

Assignment Title:   Vegetable Harvest and Post-Harvest Handling Location:  Egypt
Assignment Objective:

A private association supporting the Egyptian horticultural sector, is looking for a volunteer expert to assist horticultural producers in proper harvest and post-harvest procedures. The volunteer will visit greenhouses and post-harvest facilities and make recommendations on potential pre-harvest practices affecting quality, judging maturity of vegetables based on market requirements, harvesting operations and field handling, transportation from farm and packhouse handling.

The required qualifications for the assignment are: degree in horticulture with a focus on harvest and postharvest handling and at least five years of practical experience in harvest/post-harvest handling.

Assignment Title:   Disease and Insect Management for Agricultural Crops Location:  Lebanon
Assignment Objective:

The host organization, an agricultural training center, which offers extension services, is looking for a volunteer expert to train and improve the knowledge of the agricultural engineers of the host organization on improved pest and disease management techniques using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) with approved pesticides, if needed and assist the farmers in the main diseases and insects affecting their crops and provide efficient/economical control measures.

The required qualifications for the assignment are: university degree in agriculture, horticulture, extension, entomology or a related discipline and at least five years of practical experience in IPM.
