FSMA Produce Rule Training Courses in MN

A note to update fruit and vegetable growers who may be covered by the Food Safety Modernization Act Produce Safety Rule. The largest growers will need to be in compliance next Jan, 2018. Produce Safety Alliance Trainings are scheduled for January and March of 2018.

To determine if your farm needs to be in compliance with the Rule, here is a FDA flowchart of exemptions based on farm sales and types. There are other flowcharts of exemptions available as well with a Google search.
Here is a link to the FDA summary of the key requirements for the Rule, compliance dates and exemptions.
Upcoming Trainings:
  • The University of Minnesota and partners are planning two Produce Safety Alliance grower trainings in Minnesota in Jan and March 2018, (and more may be added depending on demand.) If your farm operation needs to be in compliance with FSMA, the PSA Grower Training Course is one way to satisfy the FSMA requirement outlined in § 112.22(c) that requires ‘At least one supervisor or responsible party for your farm must have successfully completed food safety training at least equivalent to that received under standardized curriculum recognized as adequate by the Food and Drug Administration.’ Registration will be released soon. For more information on what is included in a PSA grower training.
  • There will be a PSA Train the Trainer workshop in November in St. Paul for those that want be produce safety educators and assist in providing the PSA grower trainings. Registration will be released soon.
  • We will continue to offer GAPs workshops and educational materials and technical assistance for farm food safety best practices. For growers that don’t need to be in compliance with FSMA, these workshops will help you understand how to minimize food safety risks on your farm, prep for a GAP audit and write a food safety plan. Of course food safety is important for everyone to protect your customer and your farm!

Registration for Oct GAPs workshop in Central MN will be released soon.

Remember: Our UMN website has a food safety plan template, factsheets, videos and information on GAPs and FSMA links. http://safety.cfans.umn.edu/
